Why microinverters were the right choice for this shaded Bristol solar installation

8th Oct, 26

This Bristol solar PV installation presented two challenges: limited roof space and shading from chimneys and parapet walls. With a central inverter, one shaded panel could reduce the output of the entire array. We therefore chose Enphase IQ8HC microinverters, allowing each panel to operate independently at its best available output. Panel-level monitoring also makes performance across the array easy to compare.

Fitted beneath each panel, microinverters convert DC electricity to AC at roof level. This allows AC, rather than DC cabling to run through the house, making installation less restrictive.

We also installed an Enphase IQ Battery 5P with 5 kWh of storage. Additional modules can expand capacity to 20 kWh. A single app monitors both solar and battery performance, while scheduled charging during off-peak hours and discharging at peak times can improve financial returns.

We assess each property individually rather than specifying one brand for every project. Customers should research manufacturers carefully, because company administration can leave warranties void and investments unsupported. Although no choice is risk-free, an established global manufacturer such as Enphase can provide greater reassurance.

Our aim is to select the most effective, efficient products for every installation. Microinverters suited this property because of its shading constraints; on an unshaded roof, a central inverter may be more appropriate. Each recommendation reflects the property, system design and client’s priorities.
